Save Water, Save Money

The average household spends as much as $500 per year on its water and sewer bill. By making just a few simple changes to use water more efficiently, you could save about $170 per year. If all U.S. households installed water-efficient appliances, the country would save more than 3 trillion gallons of water and more than $18 billion dollars per year! Also, when we use water more efficiently, we reduce the need for costly water supply infrastructure investments and new wastewater treatment facilities.

The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement aimed at reducing the release of harmful gases that are believed to cause climate change. The United States is not part of the agreement. But since two thousand five, over eight hundred American mayors across the country have agreed to sign their own version of the protocol.  It is called the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.  Local leaders have agreed to follow the suggestions of the Kyoto Protocol in their communities. These mayors have come together to show how acting locally can help solve world problems and protect the environment.  "Going green" generally includes saving energy and water, using natural and renewable materials and re-using materials.  Here are some interesting ways in which several American communities are "going green."

Americans throw away enough paper in a year to build a wall 12 feet high from New York City to Los Angeles. This fact is from earth911.org, a public service Website that focuses on recycling issues. Now that’s a lot of paper!

Despite the hype that computer makers fed us a few years ago, the computer has NOT decreased the paper used in most offices today. According to the U.S. Conference of Mayors Clean Your Files Day Program, the average citizen uses 1 ½ pounds of paper per day. The average office employee uses 10,000 sheets of paper per year according to the Environmental Defense Fund.

Now that’s just the figures on paper. What about the ink cartridges and cell phones that are tossed into landfills each year. No matter how you slice it, recycling today is big business.

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people have always been trailblazers.  In a decaying neighbohood we rebuild and renovate houses into homes.  Gay people break down rigid constructs of religion and grow ourselves in personal and communal spirituality.  We open our minds to new ideas and new ways to improve our quality of life.  Gay people demand quality in cars, products, and leisure.  We've completely destroyed past stereotypes of personal grooming and body care.

With all the positive things the gay community has brought to America and the world, there is at least one negative stereotype that has been associated with many gay people.  Gay people have the luxury of high amounts disposible income which many times translates into over-indulgence and over-consumption.  This site's mission is to help reshape how that disposible income is used to not only have less of an impact on the environment but possibly a possitive impact on the environment.

This is how to be gay, fabulous, green and environment friendly!
